Mechanical keyboards
Mechanical switches give tactile and audible feedback, which some typists find helps rhythm and confidence. Linear switches are smooth; tactile switches bump at actuation; clicky switches add sound. None is objectively faster — it is about preference.
Membrane and laptop keyboards
Most people learn to type on laptops with shallow membrane keys, and many reach high speeds there. Do not wait to buy a fancy board before you start practicing.

If you type for hours daily and enjoy the feel, a mid-range mechanical board is a worthwhile comfort upgrade. If you are optimizing for raw speed, spend the money on daily practice instead.
