If you learn only one thing about typing, learn the home row. Those eight keys — A S D F for the left hand, J K L ; for the right — are home base. Every other key is a short reach away, and every fast typist returns to them between words.
Where your fingers live
Rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. Your thumbs float over the spacebar. The small bump on the F and J keys exists so you can find home without looking down.
Why it works
- It minimizes travel. Most keys are one or two rows away, so your fingers move less.
- It builds muscle memory. Repeated, consistent motions become automatic.
- It lets you look at the screen, not the keyboard — the real mark of a proficient typist.
A simple daily drill
Spend five minutes on home-row practice: alternate hands, keep your eyes on the monitor, and resist the urge to peek. Within a week the position will feel natural, and your speed on every other row will improve because you always have a reliable place to return to.
